Gropello

Gropello is a red grape variety primarily grown in the Lombardy region of northern Italy, particularly in the subregion of Valtènesi.

There are several different varieties of Gropello, including Gropello Gentile, Gropello di Mocasina, and Gropello di Tignale, each with their own unique characteristics. Wines made from Gropello are typically medium-bodied with moderate tannins and good acidity. They often display aromas of red fruits, such as cherry and raspberry, with herbal and floral undertones.

Gropello is commonly used in blends with other local grape varieties, such as Marzemino and Barbera, to produce the red wines of the Valtènesi region, including the popular Chiaretto wines. The Gropello vine is known for its ability to adapt to different growing conditions and is well-suited to the hilly and lakeside terroir of the Valtènesi area.

While primarily found in Lombardy, Gropello is also cultivated in some other parts of Italy, albeit in smaller quantities
