Mavrud/Mavroudi is an ancient grape variety with a long history of cultivation and winemaking in Bulgaria and Greece. It is known for its ability to produce high-quality, age-worthy wines with a rich and complex character. Mavrud/Mavroudi is considered one of the indigenous grape varieties of the Balkan region and is gaining recognition for its potential to produce distinctive wines that showcase the unique terroir of Bulgaria and Greece

Varietal Origin: Mavrud, also known as Mavroudi, is a red grape variety that is native to the Balkan region of Southeastern Europe. It is primarily grown in Bulgaria and Greece, where it has a long history of cultivation and winemaking.

Typical Taste Profile: Mavrud/Mavroudi wines from both Bulgaria and Greece are typically rich and full-bodied with dark fruit flavors such as blackberry, black cherry, and plum. They can also exhibit notes of spice, tobacco, and leather. Mavrud/Mavroudi wines are known for their firm tannins and high acidity, which give them structure and aging potential.

Regional Styles: Mavrud is primarily grown in Bulgaria, particularly in the Thracian Valley and the region of Plovdiv, where it is used to produce varietal wines as well as blended with other grape varieties. In Greece, Mavroudi is primarily grown in the northern regions of Thrace and Macedonia, where it is also used to produce varietal wines as well as blended with other grapes, including international grapes like Cabernet Sauvignon & Merlot.
