Zweigelt

Zweigelt is a versatile red grape variety that is a cross between Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent, and it is the most widely planted red grape in Austria, known for its fruity and easy-drinking red wines

Varietal Origin: Zweigelt was created in Austria in the 1920s by Dr. Friedrich Zweigelt, who crossed Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent to create a new grape variety that would be resistant to disease and produce high-quality red wines. It is still primarily grown in Austria today, where it is the most widely planted red grape variety.

Taste Profile: Zweigelt wines are typically medium-bodied with moderate tannins and bright acidity. They are known for their fruity character, with flavors of dark cherries, blackberries, and plums, along with subtle spice and herbal notes. Zweigelt wines are often described as approachable and easy-drinking, with a good balance between fruitiness and acidity.

Regional Styles: Zweigelt is used to produce a range of red wine styles in Austria, from light and fruity wines suitable for early drinking, to more complex and age-worthy examples that are capable of developing with bottle age. It is also sometimes used in blends with other grape varieties, particularly Blaufränkisch and St. Laurent, to add complexity and depth to the final wines
